How the break-even price works
Today's sale value = current mandi price × quantity. Remaining quantity = original quantity × (1 − shrinkage rate)months × (1 − spoilage rate)months. Break-even later price = (today's sale value + storage rent + extra transport + interest on today's sale value) ÷ remaining quantity. The net store value equals remaining quantity × expected future price minus those costs. This is why the simple shortcut “current price + rent + shrinkage + interest” is only an approximation: lost weight changes the saleable denominator.

How much weight does onion lose in storage per month?
There is no fixed monthly loss: variety, curing, temperature, ventilation and disease all matter. Use 4–8% per month as an illustrative scenario, then replace it with your measured weight loss. Spoilage should be entered separately to avoid double counting.
Is it profitable to store onion for three months?
Only when the actual later sale price exceeds your break-even price after rent, weight loss, spoilage, transport and financing. Enter your own prices and costs above; the estimate is not a forecast.
What is the average onion storage cost per quintal in India?
